The history of the modern bra.
Many people do not know that the success of the modern bra was due in no small portion
to World War I.
Since the 1550’s the corset was the most common form of support for women to wear
under their garments. It was not until the early 1900’s that a woman named Mary Phelps
Jacob was issued the first patent for what can be considered today’s bra. She did not
make much money with her invention and later sold it to the Warner Brothers Corset
Company. This proved to be wise purchase. Shortly thereafter the United Sates War
Industries Board asked women to stop buying corsets to free up metal for the war effort.
In addition to freeing up thousands of tons of metal it had women looking for a substitute
support solution. Additionally, America had a new view of its female population. For the
first time women were asked to work in factories and wear uniforms to help fill the
gaping hole in the labor force created by the military’s need for the male population.
These new roles needed woman to have more practical undergarments then a corset.
The result was sales soared and the Warner Brother Corset Factory went on to earn
million from that original patent.
The evolution of today’s bras has continued. Both fashion bras and functional bras as
well as maternity bras have all filled different needs in today’s undergarment industry.
As new materials and technologies come available one can only speculate as to what the
next leap in the development of women’s undergarments will be.
